Texas is known for many things including cowboys, horses, wide open spaces, and independence. Another thing Texas is known for is beautiful women, but I am not just taking about physical beauty. Texas has produced numerous women who have changed the world, below are just a few of the beautiful women of Texas.
Miriam A. Ferguson was the first female Governor of Texas and she won two nonconsecutive elections, in 1924 and 1932. She paved the way for Anne Richards and other females in Texas governmental positions.
Bessie Coleman was born in 1892 to a Cherokee father and an African American mother. She became the first black woman aviator. During World War I she was not allowed to learn to fly in the United States so she became fluent in French and got her license and training in France at the age of 29.
Susana Dickinson is said to be the only Anglo survivor at the battle of the Alamo and was sent by Santa Anna to inform the Texans that they should suffer the same fate as those at the Alamo. Susana sent the word, but it was a battle cry to rally the Texans and not a warning.
Janis Joplin is often considered one of the greatest caucasian women to ever sing the blues. She started in Port Arthur, Texas then gained national notoriety.
Sheryl Swoopes had received a basketball scholarship to Texas Tech University where she took the team to their first NCAA title. After graduating from Tech, Sheryl made the women’s Olympic team in 1996 and won gold and then another gold in the 2000 games. And 1997, Swoopes was one of the first women to be signed for the WNBA.
Carrie Marcus began her career in fashion as a blouse buyer and saleswoman at A. Harris and Company and by the age of 21 had was the highest paid working women in Dallas. In 1907 in Dallas she opened Neiman Marcus and the store turned a profit the first year and a tradition was born.
Mary Kay Ash took her life savings of $5,000 founded Mary Kay Cosmetics which resulted in a that has over 500,000 independent beauty consultants in about 29 markets worldwide. It has also been one of the 100 best companies to work for in America multiple times.
These women helped to shape what Texas is today and we should all take a moment to thank them for their hard work.
